I had to come out of my UA-cam retirement for this one, as the 1863 built Furness Railway 0-4-0 Steam locomotive, the oldest Standard Gauge loco operating in the UK, has visited the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway to celebrate the Railway's 40th Anniversary. It's in immaculate condition, and tackled the very steep gradients on the line with ease. Also working today 27/08/2023 was 'Rosyth No 1' wh...

Whilst I have decided not to upload videos onto UA-cam, this occasion, when Saint 2999 'Lady of Legend' was attending was too much for me not to attend. So this video covers from Friday the 28th of April until Sunday the 30th of April 2023.

Very impressive and all kudos to the man who was working hardest on that climb, the fireman. What was the gross weight behind the tender, something in the region of 450 tons? I wonder what the bark from the chimney would have been if she was in the original single blastpipe form.

Hello Hugh, I haven't had my 00 Gauge layout for four years now, and being in my late seventies I can't remember exactly what I did to improve the running of the Hornby tender drive locos. All I do remember is that I ran a wire from the loco pick up directly to the motor, thus bypassing the unreliable tender connection. I hope you can sort it out...Bob

The GWR did look into building a 4-8-0 but trials didn't result in that happening. This was my haunting ground from 1974-1979 during high school days, spent many times in this maintenance shed, I know this was in 1990 but even then a Split Head code Class 37 (37038 Stratford Allocated) was very rare at Canton as they had none allocated in the 70's early 80's as all Canton 37 were central headcode Loco's, Just so happens 37038 is still going being now owned by HN Rail, This brought back many strong memories when we use to see more Tractors than sense, those were the days.

I have had a few rides behind No.1. They keep it in excellent condition, I mean it looks like its only a couple of years after a boiler refresh not about to go into one ! 👍

Absolutely agree, like so many locos in this position, she's been kept in First Class condition by the P&BR, and the cost of doing this boiler work will be a large pull on resources...Thanks as always...Bob

If it was Scrapped. That would have also been okay. Its a Machine. While yes its great to see since many People worked on it. But think of it this Way, the way of the Organisation. This is Part of a Long Forgotten Operation. It costs Money to keep as it Chugs Diesel Fuel Like a Champ! If you scrap it. No Money will be lost, but you rather Gain Money from selling Metal Maybe

When you are involved with any piece of machinery, you become emotionally attached to it, hence the strong feelings that are felt towards locomotives, seeing them evokes happy memories, which in these depressing times, can only be a good thing.

Thank you Thomas, unfortunately, that's something we can't do anything about.

@@robmasterman I know. I live a little north of where you were filming and, every summer, we suffer the sound pollution from those infernal machines. Some of them are not too bad but there is definitely a sub-culture of morons who soup up their bikes and blast the air for miles around. Still a great video though!
